Blog of Nick Hastings-Winch

Welcome to my Blog.

January 2011

Chester Wheel

I thought I'd try and make the most of the wheel for the short period that it was up. The image below of the wheel was taken from the river Dee looking over the weir and towards the Old Dee Bridge. The wheel was spinning so to get the right exposure I covered the top half of the frame with my hand and gave the rest of the image a 30 second exposure. The second image was taken from directly beneath the wheel just as you are about to board.

Early Snow

I have tried to make the most of the early snow fall this year with these two images. The first I decided to shoot into the evening sun to highlight all the foliage. The pheasant on hedge image was taken by chance from our front room just before he flew off.

Cheshire Life Double Spread

In the November issue of Cheshire Life an image of mine was printed accross two pages for their 'postcards from Cheshire' feature.

The image was taken from the Clock Tower at Eaton Hall while working on the commission for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster.

Ice Formations

Thanks to a local farmer who has left a leaking hose to a water trough I was able to get these unusual images of a mass of icicles that have come down through a tree and encased everything in a thick layer of ice. Also the autumn leaves add some colour interest.

Early November 2010

Frozen Britain

Some hoarfrost, a light sprinkling of snow and some freezing fog have made these images lot more atmospheric than in normal conditions.

October 2010

Pheasant Shoot

A day taking pictures for a commission. This shot of a beater on a local shoot flushing the pheasants was timed just right to get one gliding overhead.

Early October 2010

The Capital

A trip to London wouldn't be complete without an image of Buckingham Palace. This one stood out because of the late light coming through the gates.

September 2010

Windscreen Dew

Some macro photography on my car windscreen yielded me some interesting images below. The morning dew was very heavy, so before it was all burnt off in the sun I captured these images of the water droplets reflecting the surroundings.

Goodwood Revival

Two images from my first visit to the Goodwood Revival.

Sky Pattern

Taken from my back garden at sunset. I couldn't believe how many different types of cloud there were in one place.

Bolesworth Classic

The horses tail flying upwards is what makes this picture I think.

Duxford Flying Legends

For an air show blue skies and fluffy clouds are a godsend. The picture of the back end of the biplane shows what you might see from a chasing plane.

Fancy Peacock

While wandering around the shop at Bodnant Gardens I was surprised to come across this male peacock admiring himself in a clothes mirror. I grabbed this picture before he was shown the exit!

High Dynamic Range Image

Below is my first attempt at HDR photography. I bracketed five images to get a range of exposures and then played with them in Photoshop to get an interesting result. I learned it's best not to do it on a windy day but on still day as any movement in the picture will mean the images won't merge crisply.

Winter 09/10

Snowdonia

This winter has provided a fair amount of snow so far, so on a recent trip to Llyn Idwal I tried make the most of it. To get an idea of scale you can just see people walking in the distance on the other side of the lake.

Bolesworth Commission

I started a commission for Mrs Barbour of the Bolesworth Castle Estate this month. Below are two of the images I have managed to capture so far. Tattenhall Marina and the lake in the Bolesworth Castle grounds.

Joe Cornish Workshop

I am a great admirer of Joe Cornish and his work so when I went on a workshop of his in the North York Moors I was happy to get this image last thing on what was a very wet day!

Sutherland, Scotland

I've posted this image because I liked the rock pool in the foreground blending in with the distant landscape and almost looking bigger in scale than it really is.

Cosford Air Show

The red arrows usually make a good picture, but I wanted to get something a bit more unusual from the standard formation shot, so I ended up with the image below.

Image in International Garden Photographer of the Year Competition

One of my images was commended in the above competition under the Garden Views category. The images have been exhibited at Kew Gardens and have been published in a book of the same name, available in most book stores. Here is a link to my image on the IGPOTY website: http://www.igpoty.com/competition02/gallery_GardenViews_3.asp?parent=gallery

Cheshire Life Article

In this months issue of Cheshire Life Magazine (May edition) there is a 5 page article in the front on my photography work that I was commissioned to take for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster. (See exhibition further down)

Cholmondeley Pageant of Power

Below are a few images I took as part of the press launch for the Pageant of Power at Cholmondeley Castle. The actual event will take place on 18th and 19th July 2009.

Exhibition at Eaton Hall

An exhibition of my photographs which I was commissioned to take for the Duke & Duchess of Westminster was held at Eaton Hall over Easter and was a great success. Below are some images of the exhibition, a piece about myself and an overview of the exhibition. In all there were 108 images on display. The exhibition is now touring to the other three rural estates.

December 2008

A recent trip to the Classic Car Show at the NEC in Birmingham was full of fantastic cars modern and old. I have a great love of sports and classic cars so here are some images from the day. Being so packed with people and stands it's not the best place to get good images of cars which is why you have to look out for the cars with a bit of space round them.

March 2008

On my recent travels to the Grosvenors rural estates which are in Cheshire, Lancashire, Sutherland and Spain I’ve seen some fantastic wildlife and plant life, so I’ve posted some of my latest images below from my winter session in January.
